OVERVIEW:

The MapInfo requires an upgrades from time to time with computer roll out and various other factors the install may be completed as an update or a new install completed internally. The upgrade is like the updates on apps on your mobile phone when patches are released these are made available, to access and updates follow the instructions within this article. To complete an install of the MapInfo toolbar/interface you will need to know the database name and details for your server. This is to be completed locally on the end-users computer.


** Note - This tutorial is for an upgrade of an existing installation of the AssetFinda MapInfo interface. The defaults.txt file has been removed from this download so that it does not override your existing settings**


**PLEASE BACKUP YOUR DATABASE BEFORE INSTALLING ANY UPGRADES TO THE WEBSITE OR INTERFACES**


*N.B if you are using a version of MapInfo older than 2017 you will need to follow the instructions for Version 3 - How to upgrade to the latest version of MapInfo Assetfinda Toolbar Interface



PROCESS:

Step 1:

To start you will need to open MapInfo as an Administrator. 


If you have MapInfo pinned to your Taskbar you can do this by holding the Shift key down and right-clicking on the icon then click on Run as administrator



If it's not pinned you will need to do the following steps:


1. type MapInfo in your search bar located at the bottom left-hand corner of your screen

2. right-click on MapInfo

3. click on Run as administrator





Step 2:

You will now see a User Account Control box, click on Yes




Step 3:

Locate the Home tab at the top of MapInfo and select Open Table




You will need to click on Open DBMS Connection as indicated in the screenshot below.




Once the Open DBMS Connection box appears, it should already be defaulted on ODBC then click on New...




The Select Data Source, click on the Machine Data Source then New...




When the Create New Data Source box appears, check the System Data Source (Applies to this machine only) then Next>



select SQL Server then Next>



now click Finish




You should now see a Create a New Data Source to SQL Server. You only need to populate the Name: and Server: fields



  • Name: is the name given to your database which can be found on SQL


  • Server: is the name of your SQL Server as shown in the window belowIf you have already signed in, you can still get this information by clicking on Connect Object Explorer button as shown below. This will now give you the box above



You need to select With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entered by the user. Then populate the Login ID: field with your username for the SQL instance and the Password: filed is the password used with the Login ID. Now click on Next >




You now need to check the box next to Change the default database to: then click on the drop-down box to the right of where master is seen and select the database you are setting up from the list then click Next> 




now click on Finish




Click on Test Data Source...



If you were successful in the ODBC Connection you will get a SQL Server ODBC Data Source Test stating TEST COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY! Click OK



Once you have clicked on OK you will be taken back to the previous screenshot supplied. Click OK



Step 4:

You are now ready to download the MapInfo Interface application which you can do via the link supplied below.


mi_17_interface_version_v4_release_03_feb_20



At the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, a zipped file has been downloaded onto your computer. Click on the down arrow next to it then click on Show in folder. This will open the File Explorer where the folder is located. 




Locate the file mi_17_interface_version_4_release_24_sept_18, right click and select Extract All... 




You will now need to choose where you want the file extracted to. Just leave it set at default settings (if you do want to change the location click on Browse... then navigate to where you want to save it). This will save it in your Downloads folder where the zipped one is currently located. Ensure the Show extracted files when complete is ticked. Click on Extract.



It will now start extracting your files. 




If you made sure the Show extracted files when complete was ticked and it has finished extracting you will be given the below window making it easier to find (if you forgot to tick it you will see it in your Downloads folder). Double click on the folder to open it.  




  • the below files will need to be either cut or copied. To start hold the Ctrl key down then select the A key. This will select both files or you can use your mouse to select both then choose your option below.
  1.  to copy the file Select CTRL + C  or;
  2.  to cut the file select CTRL + X 




Navigate to C:\mi_interface_v4 then paste the files. You can either right-click and click on Paste or you can use the CTRL + V functionality 



In C:\mi_interface_v4 locate the InteropHelper.dll file (as shown below)



Right-click on it and select Properties



You will need to tick the box at the bottom right corner labelled Unblock then click on OK



Now go to the top of the folder you are already in and you will see the icons folder. Double click on it to open it.




Scroll down until you find the MapInfoTest.dll file



Right-click on it and select Properties



You will need to tick the box at the bottom right corner labelled Unblock then click on OK




Still, in the same location, you are currently in you will need to scroll up and locate the Defaults text file




Double click on it to open the text file. Once it opens you will see the below Notepad which will need to be set up. You only need to worry about the fields with the orange which has been written up to tell you where you will find this information that is your site details.



Note: this file can be copied from an operational MapInfo Interface.



Once the settings have been changed you will need to save it. Go to the top left corner, click on File and then Save or hold the Ctrl key down and hit the S key.




Step 5:

Go to MapInfo. If there is no column headed Tools on the right-hand side you will need to go to the Home tab, Tool Windows and then select Tool Extension

 

 

You will now see the Tools column. You need to select the Registered tab, click on the down arrow beside Options then click on Register Tool

 

 

You will be given a Register Tool box. Type AssetFinda in the Title: field and then click on the dots as indicated by the number 2.

 

 

This will display a File Explorer window. Click on AssetFinda_Interface_ver_4_1 then on Open. If you aren't taken directly to the file you need it will be located in C:\ then in the mi_interface_v4 folder.

 

The Registered Tool box will resemble the picture below. Click on OK


You will need to go back to the Tools column, locate AssetFinda and click on the box beside labelled AutoLoad. this will place a tick in the box making it load every time you open MapInfo

 

You have now successfully updated your Interface.

 

Close MapInfo and reopen and you are ready to go.
